Entrance Gate for Park Babelsberg

2023

Recreation of a historical original

Disclaimer: This is a project from the time of my apprenticeship. The drawings, planning etc. were not made by me.

This is the defining project from my apprenticeship, being the center of my attention for well over a year.

Park Babelsberg of Babelsberg Palace, Potsdam used to have two identical gates for the main entrances. In the passage of time one of these gates was ‘lost’ with no information on what happened to it.

After many many years of the park having just one gate, the incredible honor of recreating the lost second gate was given to me!

Over the course of over one thousand hours of work, I made a copy of the still extant old gate. Work included milling down massive square stock to make the octagonal posts, turning the hinge points, welding the main body, forging individual parts, casting decorative elements in zinc, making special lock covers, recreating the original door handles and riveting countless induvidual units together.

In one project I was able to practice almost all techniques metalworking has to offer and I’ll always be grateful for getting the chance to build this one of a kind gate, which will surely outlive me.
