Fence in Park Sanssouci
2023
Solid steel construction with handforged decorative rivets and small cast brass beetle.
Disclaimer: This is a project from the time of my apprenticeship. The design and idea for this fence is not by me.
In Park Sanssouci in Potsdam, Germany a section of a historical wall has been removed because it was too heavily damaged by a steadily growing tree. The gap was to be filled by an unobtrusive bit of fence, visually blending in with wooden fences in the area.
I was given the task of building this incredibly solid fence. Very thick solid steel was chosen to account for loss of material due to rust because the surface was left to age naturally. To follow the wall perfectly, the fence had to be build in a specific, uneven curve.
In order to give the rivet heads more visual appeal I forged a custom head former for the task.
Free reign was given to me to come up with an eye-catcher for kids and attentive bypassers. I decided to build a small longhorn beetle out of brass to adorn the fence.
